TABLE TENNIS REPORT WEEK TWO FOR INCLUSION IN SURREY ADVERTISER

Two of the main contenders for the Premier title Merrow A and Godalming A   got off to a cracking start with  a white wash of College A and Challoner B respectively. Heroes on the night were Martin Townshend, John Robinson and Jason Tendler for Merrow with Adam Laws, Rob Pountney and Federico Viterbo starring for Godalming.

Last year’s Champions Burymead B, without Chris Bush, didn’t fare so well taking six points from Merrow C for whom Andy Mudie, a past Guildford Mens Singles Champion, was playing his last match in the Guildford League due to a move to Scotland for business reasons- Always a delight to watch He will be sadly missed! Veteran Richard Tanner, a superb touch player, got a customary maximum during this match although Andy pushed him to five sets.

A newsworthy item was the return of Simon Vine to the league playing for Godalming B against Cody in an 8-2 win. In good form he took a maximum! -Simon, it will be remembered, took the Guildford Men’s s   Singles title in 1975 as a Junior in an era when no less than 12 youngsters played in the top division-Mark Oakly,Glen Baker ,David Hannah, Steve Woodgate,  Sarah Cresswell et al!

In  the First Division Godalming D came out 8-2 winners over fellow promotees  Abinger A. with  Steve Day, Jonathan Cannon and Charlie  C doing the damage with  Brendan Bayley replying for Abinger. Last years top of the averages Mike Hughes was unfortunately  missing from the Abinger line up-It is worth noting that four of the matches went to five sets all won by Godalming.

In Division two Bramley B, without Linda Makepiece, could only draw with a familiar Cranleigh side for whom Angela Coventry took three. Another Bramley side C were crushed  9-1 ,for whom the writer got a duck, by Aftermath C which sent them to the top of the table-Dave Harden, Dave Thomas and Dave Wilson Starred with Steve Palmer claiming a point for Bramley.
